Beans Flat, 300g,
Beautifully fresh and tasty Organic Flat Beans from Spain.
Flat beans (AKA runner beans) are a fantastic crop. Stronger in flavour and courser in texture than the tender French style green beans, they take a few minutes longer to cook. Full of fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals, they're a good addition to a healthy diet.
Recipe Ideas:
- Simply slice off the stalky top that was attached to the plant, leave on the tail (if your beans are particularly large you may wish the remove the stringy edges with a potato peeler) cut into angled chunks and boil or steam until tender as a side dish. Younger, smaller beans will take around 3 minutes and larger, older beans may take a little longer. Test with a fork to see when they are done. Dress simply with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt or go to town with a herby (pesto/chimichurri/zhoug/chermoula) or spicy (sesame-soy-ginger-chilli/harissa...) dressing to match your dish.
- Runner beans work really well in a Sri Lankan style curry with coconut milk, turmeric, ginger, curry leaves and brown mustard seeds. Fantastic on short grain brown rice with lime and coriander.
- Flat beans, garlic, lots of olive oil and tomatoes sautéed together in a large pan with some salt and pepper, maybe some oregano or parley, make an absolutely delicious pasta sauce or simple summery stew served with crusty bread and salty cheese.
- Slice the beans very thinly and sauté or simmer until just cooked, then add to quiches, frittatas, omelettes, pies, tarts or salads.
- Runner bean, courgette and lemon risotto is absolutely delicious topped with toasted hazelnuts. The perfect summery supper!
