What's on our food?

There was an excellent research project carried out in Sweden recently. It showed the effects of changing from a completely conventional diet to an organic one. The results were amazing.

I know when I go and buy a pizza I don’t want to think about how the raw ingredients of the pizza were produced. I don’t want to, I want to eat the pizza and enjoy it.

Sometimes we need to let go, I was speaking to Marion Ruane recently and she mentioned “fatigue” around food and health. Choosing food can become a burden rather than something to celebrate. “You gotta try this, you gotta try that”, what do you do? Every week we hear “new research” telling us food that was “good” is now “bad” and food that was “bad” is now “good” it is just too much, and it really doesn’t need to be so complicated.

The food production system benefits from all this confusion. It is set up to encourage us to think very little about the food we eat and it actively masks the reality of the way food is produced.

Back to the pizza though, I buy it, eat it and enjoy it. Mostly I feel bloated and bad after it, but I choose to live with that. However when I buy a pizza I always check for a couple of ingredients that will make me leave it on the shelf, such as artificial sweeteners, or hydrogenated oils. They are the game changers for me. But when it comes to the raw ingredients, I assume they are ok. The Wheat, the soya the maize, but are they really. Is GM soya ok? Why doesn’t it say GM on the label? If animal feed contains GM ingredients it is labelled as such, well at least the cows know I suppose. I don’t want to eat genetically modified foods, however when I buy that pizza I am consuming just that.

There are two issues here. One, the mass food production business uses the cheapest of ingredients to make food. When did a pizza need 37 ingredients to make it palatable? But as consumers we want cheap. It comes back to food being the commodity we want to spend least of our income on. (Yet it has the biggest impact on our most valuable asset, our health)

The second issue is awareness, if the packaging clearly stated the chemical names and the contents of the pizza and how it was produced then we would think a little more before throwing it into the basket and bringing it home for tea.

What can we do about the pizza? The answer is really very easy, go back to basics, use the raw ingredients, buy fresh produce, or produce that is not combined with 30 other ingredients to make it good.

In a time strapped, cash strapped scenario we can only do the best we can and no more. Step by step, little change by little, we can eat better and our families will eat better. We will feel better, and believe it or not the planet will really have a better chance of seeing through the next generation.

The only way real change can happen is if we choose to change. If there is an alternative, a choice that doesn’t cost the earth, which is produced sustainably, produced with due consideration for both the health of the consumer and our beleaguered planet then obviously we would choose that? The great news is we are choosing and this is causing the big food production companies to take note and make changes. General Mills in the US (massive cereal producing giant) has banned GM ingredients in Cheerios.

So don’t get over burdened with the latest research, just eat well, eat fresh and eat organic where possible.
