Ireland: Report welcomed by organic growers Organic growers here have welcomed a study which they say shows that food grown without artificial fertilisers is nutritionally better. The study by the University of Newcastle School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development indicates that fruit and vegetables grown without artificial fertilisers have significantly more key nutrients, including vitamin C. The Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association, IOFGA, said the research challenges the Food Standards Agency in the UK which has in the past dismissed the nutritional benefits of organic food. I just wanted to let you all know that there is a FREE open day in Rinville forest park this Sunday, organised by Biodiversity Galway. Basically anybody can go along and learn something about biodviersity in Ireland there is crafts, seed planting and face painting too, so should be a good day out!Also we have just started supplying a new restuarant cafe that is opening this Thursday, called "Kai", it is on Sea Road, and its ethos is all local organic and ethical so it is definitely worth a look.

So, the summer had finally ground to a close, at least that's what we thought. Until early this week we were visited by some beautiful sunshine with temperatures in the high teens, lovely! Growth of plants that at this time of year have usually ceased or slowed dramatically continues, so the courgette plants are still producing the cucumbers have jumped to life again, a new crop of scallions is nearing harvest date.
