Molly the dog

General News : We had our planting machine out in force last week, all our onions (over 50,000 plants) celery and celeriac are now in the ground. We have actually planted a selection of most crops at this stage and will continue to do so throughout the summer. The first broccoli and cabbage plants are coming along nicely if not a little slowly (due to all the cold weather) and are safely nestled under the relative warmth of a fleece.        We used to plant everything by hand but these days we use a transplanter to put most of our…

Check this out photos from the farm

General News : The farm is buzzing with activity we have never been so busy, which is great and we are thankful to be in this lucky situation. It wouldn’t be possible without all the hard work and dedication of the team of people working at Green Earth Organics. Many were new starters this year and they have taken to their new jobs with enthusiasm and care. On a farm it is quite a lot of work to guide that little fragile seed from the packet to a fresh organic I hope that these weekly e-mails will give you an…

A cute country dog

It is the topic of every conversation at the moment, the weather is truly wonderful. I will just temper that with a slight comment, is this usual for March, is the climate changing? Are we seeing a shift to more extremes at times we wouldn’t expect, you can draw your own conclusions. So back to business. It is fantastic and allowing us to get loads done we transplanted the first lettuce last week and…… are sowing outdoors salad, parsnip, early potatoes, and loads of other stuff this week. Last year we were lured into a sense of summer in early…

Before I launch into an explanation for the strange title,  here are a couple of pictures of spring I took this weekend. There is one photo that has nothing to do with spring! Interestingly in one well known supermarket I was price checking the organic produce they had on sale and I noticed some lovely cherry vine tomatoes, on closer inspection they didn’t look so lovely have a loo below and make up your own mind. Thge white residue was on the tomatoes not on the plastic. This is probably only foliar plant feed, but it did make me wonder…

A big fat lie

Written by
A big fat lieI read a very thought provoking article in the Guardian this weekend by Eliane Glaser. She talks about our perception of food and what we are led to believe is good and right by governments, corporations, and more recently by celebrity chefs.  It is very interesting and definitely worth a read, but what drew my attention was the piece about Organics. To quote: ‘Then there's organic food. The tech spec of organic food – the fact that nothing synthetic is used in its production – suggests flavour, nutritional value and agricultural ethics. But it has become a…

Sprouting from all sorts of place

Written by
We have done only a tiny little video this week, as you know it is purple sprouting season and here is a snippet to remind you of that, it is no more than 15 seconds!
Also this week, I decided to go out into the tunnels and the farm and see if I could find signs of spring. It occurred to me that sometimes it is hard to take the time to notice the passing of the seasons.  So here is my little take on spring on the farm.           Gardening: What can you be doing in your garden at the…

Crazy wild rocket

I don’t know where the time is going,  it certainly seems to be slipping away. For us at Green Earth Organics farm we are anxiously awaiting a spell of dry weather in order to allow us to get out and about and start preparing and tilling the soil. Last week we did get an opportunity to get out start ploughing. This was the first available opportunity in many weeks (See Dec’s happy face at unearthing another monstrous stone!) We use ploughing to turn the soil over and bury many of the weeds and debris that are left on the soil…

Arrrrrrgh Radish Carnage

Did you know that we supply the same great fresh local organic veg to many of Galway's top restuarants as we do to our customer home deliveries?  Next time you are out for a meal, in Kai(every now and again), Ard Bia, Artisan, Oscars, Massimos, Aniar or Cava, have a little look, they get their organic veg from us. Anyway the purple sprouting broccoli is in full production mode now and we have loads of it, so if you are getting a seasonal box, enjoy, we have increased the amounts too. It is a real seasonal treat but is short…

Local Food for Local People 06-Feb

Written by
To parody that great Welsh drama, "The League of Gentlemen", local food for local people is becoming a bit of social slogan these days.I notice with great interest that supermarkets are trying for all they are worth to show their support for Irish produce. The fact is, they are supporting it; this is making such a difference to farmers and producers up and down the country. They are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts or because they love Irish food, they are doing this because you and I the consumers are opting and asking for Irish…
